Dr. Melanie O'Shea

Dr Melanie O’Shea is an experienced clinical psychologist (MPsych), who has also completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in psychology. She is a published author and researcher on effects of cannabis and has a special interest in treating individuals experiencing alcohol and other drug addiction and dependence. She is a regular presenter at international conferences and national radio interviews. She has experience in university, government, and private organisational settings, and is currently in private practice on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.


Specialisation: Melanie’s primary specialty is the treatment of individuals dependent on cannabis. Her PhD thesis on this topic was titled “the lasting neurobehavioural effects of cannabis exposure: a comparison of perinatal, adolescent, and early adult exposure”. This research on this topic has attracted both national and international press, and has resulted in scientific publications on the consequences of cannabis exposure.

Fees and charges:
Each standard 1 hour psychological consultation is well below the recommended Australian Psychological Society (APS) recommended rate of $186. Melanie is registered with the Medicare where a substantial rebate is available under new Medicare (item 2710). Health fund rebates also apply, and she is registered with a number of EAPs (Employment Assistant Programs).
Referral Process
Appointments can be made by the client by calling the telephone number listed below. If referred under Medicare, it is helpful to bring a copy of the Mental Health Plan to the first consultation.
